Basic vs supplementary insurance: what nobody explains
The LAMal basic insurance is mandatory for all residents in Switzerland.
How does the basic insurance work?
You first pay the chosen annual franchise (CHF 300–2,500). After that the insurance kicks in, but you still pay 10% of additional costs up to a maximum of CHF 700/year. After that, the insurance covers 100% of services included in the basic package.
What the basic insurance does NOT cover
Dental treatment, private/semi-private hospital room, doctor of your choice, glasses, alternative medicine, full foreign coverage, non-urgent transport, certain medicines and fitness activities.
Supplementary insurance
Available from CHF 20/month additional, with great variety depending on coverage and profile.
Which franchise to choose?
A personal decision depending on your health, income and needs. A personalised analysis helps find the optimal balance.
