The Betreibung: what happens if you don't pay in Switzerland?

3 min read

In Switzerland, not paying a debt is a problem that can affect your life for years.

What is the Betreibung?

The legal debt collection procedure (SchKG). Any creditor can initiate a Betreibung against you.

How does it work?

The creditor requests a Zahlungsbefehl (payment order) from your municipality's Betreibungsamt. You have 10 days to pay or file a Rechtsvorschlag (objection).

The Betreibungsregisterauszug

Every Betreibung is recorded, even if you paid. Landlords, employers and banks can request this extract. A clean register is essential in Switzerland.

What to do?

Never ignore it. Debt correct: pay immediately. Debt disputed: file Rechtsvorschlag within 10 days.
