AVS number in Switzerland: what it is and how to get it

4 min read

One of the first things you need after arriving in Switzerland is your AVS number (AHV).

What is the AVS number?

The AVS is the first pillar of Swiss social security (retirement, disability, survivors). The number has 13 digits in the format 756.XXXX.XXXX.XX and stays with you for life.

What is it for?

Social contributions, your employer declaring your salary, your health insurance card and dealings with authorities.

How to get it

Usually automatic: register with your commune, sign your work contract — your employer registers you with the compensation fund (Ausgleichskasse). If you don't work: apply through the cantonal compensation fund.
